Choose one of three options:
1. Composition (Original Melody) — Compose an original melody (no chords or other parts) that is:
- clearly in a major or minor key;
- mostly quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted quarter notes, and a few half notes (particularly at ends of phrases);
- 16 measures long (four well-defined 4-bar phrases that end with long notes on strong beats);
- a double period (See the last item at Melodic Structure.);
- mostly conjunct (stepwise); and
- a 10th or less in range.
You choose the clef, key signature, and time signature.
The melodic analysis handout you received last week (“Silent Night”, “Clementine”, and “God Save the King”) may aid you.
Optional — If you e-mail a rough draft and even a second draft to me, I will provide comments within 24 hours. I will only grade the final version.
2. Identification (Scavenger Hunt)
3. Performance (Sing and Play) — Simultaneously sing and perform at the piano as follows:
- Choose a vocal solo with piano accompaniment that you are capable of performing by yourself.
- Submit the music to me for approval. I will respond within 24 hours.
- Record yourself singing while playing the piano accompaniment. (You may use your phone.)
- E-mail the recording to me.
