Competently means
  • correct pitches (the first time),
  • correct fingering (the first time),
  • a steady rhythm (slow tempos are encouraged), and
  • good posture and hand position (make it a habit).

I monitor your progress from semester to semester.
(I do not hear every key every semester.) Occasionally
I ask to hear a key you performed competently in the past.
If it is no longer satisfactory, I subtract it from your list.

4th Semester Grade — I ask you to
perform several cadence patterns at random.
  • 100 — You perform 3 in a row flawlessly.
  • 90 — You perform 3 in a row with 1 minor error.
  • 80 — You perform 3 in a row with 2 minor errors.
If you make major errors or more than 2 minor errors,
you perform cadence patterns again the next week.
If the next week is finals week, we will talk.
